The Future of Mariachi in the Latino Community
The vibrant sounds of mariachi filled the air as the Herencia Mariachi Academy showcased its talented students during a recent performance celebrating the beauty of tradition and culture. For these young musicians, mariachi is more than just music—it’s a connection to their heritage and a path to greater opportunities.
Denise Hernandez Sanchez, a seventh-year student at the academy, shared how the program has shaped her aspirations. “I’m thinking about pursuing mariachi as a career, especially going into ethnomusicology,” she said. “This experience has opened my eyes to how deeply music is tied to our identity and history.”
The academy, which serves students across the Inland Empire, is dedicated to preserving the rich tradition of mariachi while fostering academic and personal growth. Through rigorous training and performances, students not only learn technical skills but also gain confidence, discipline, and a sense of pride in their cultural roots.
Dr. Teresa Serrano, a member of the Herencia Mariachi Academy’s Executive Board, emphasized the importance of blending cultural preservation with educational advancement. “This work is so important to me, especially being a first-generation college graduate,” she said. “To teach the new generation to stay connected to their roots but also guide them to higher education is incredibly fulfilling.”
The academy’s mission resonates deeply with students and families alike, providing a space where culture and education intersect. As the academy continues to grow, it remains a beacon of opportunity, inspiring students to honor their heritage while envisioning a bright future.
For these young musicians, mariachi is more than music—it’s a legacy. Through their talent and dedication, they are keeping traditions alive and building a foundation for success.
